Subject: Can't have it all. Where would you put it?
It was disappointing to miss Here Comes Sunshine by two shows (and to never see it), but also a surprise to see other new songs. This was a turning point personally - the last good show I saw. I never got to see a bunch of songs from the era (Lost Sailor; Keep Your Day Job, Reuben & Cerise, Death Don’t, Last Time, Days), but I did see about 150, so there's that. Though there were still some good sets if you knew where to look, after this the tapes I was getting had a forlorn element, so I skipped shows for over two years. This was supposed to be a fun endeavor, a bacchanalia with the tribes, but the integral spark was fading as the music faltered. I could not figure out why they didn't just come off the road for six months for rest and for woodshedding the problems. But in retrospect, Jer's health wasn't necessarily better when the Dead were off the road.
We all have shows of which we have no memory, right? I can't recall whom I went with or the trip home. I do remember some of the show itself - that they were playing strangely mellow but professional, and that the crowd got so electric during the second set. I had better seats than the night before, with way better sound. There is no SBD of the second set. I thought I had one, but I stuck my tape in and it's the vernon_9474 source - just very low gen. I'm not sure how I got one this close to the master. I probably only played it once. The AUDs are more exciting for these shows anyway.
First Set. The house (and SBD) mix were goofy for Touch of Grey. There's no punch - no rock-n-roll - to the sound for this set. After Vince's solo in Little Red Rooster Healy is finally forced to turn on the rhythm guitar for Bobby's Slide Practice™. Peggy-O glides with minimal - if professional - effort. After Ramble there's a brief Beer Barrel Polka tuning. Cassidy is the best so far. It's been solid GOGD, it's just that there's no power. Dough Knees, however, has the spark that leaves 'em happy for the break. Maybe the set needs a MTX to come alive.
Second Set. This set has more fire, but Bobby's guitar is mostly turned off again for Playing in the Band, and he is losing his voice (throughout these shows). This would seem weird after the long break, but he had been touring Weir & Wasserman and the issue soon needed medical treatment. Into this average show comes a winsome, synapse-flooding Eyes. Bobby is on MIDI guitar and Vince is also very good here. I had heard Corrina on tapes (the rare Weir/Hunter collusion so far sounding like underwritten farrago), yet wasn't expecting to bag one. It had improved and Bobby's rough vox fit OK with this song. This solid Terrapin is one of the longest - chiefly because of a cool, unique jam, instigated by the drummers. Next comes a major, half hour Drums>Space ... that's not very memorable. It has better sound on the vid. The Other One is ethereal, and remains feathery (this time it's Jer's guitar that's turned down at the end and again on the next one). Surprisingly, they go off after a decent Morning Dew without a final rouser. Gloria was a new one for almost everybody, one of just fifteen (actually they may have covered it in '67/'68; it's the world's easiest song to play). Bobby partially gives up on making any delivery serious, but saves what he has left for the end. And they have a good time, spilling the crowd into the lots happy.
1st Set: C
2nd Set: B-
Overall = 3 stars
Highlights:
Eyes of the World - winsome, flooding
Terrapin Station - solid verses leads to unique jam
SOURCES: The 140249_set1 provides the first set SBD (it mislabels Ramble). So far there's no SBD for the second set, but miller_30071 is the most dynamic AUD, with the most presence and low end. Some (like AKG460_Walker_Darby) run fast. The vid is usually up on YouTube (with a small cut in Terrapin), as a handheld AUD.
Subject: Mile High Dead!
My brother scored us 8th & 9th row seats and that was the closest I ever got up front. Whole 'nother world it was. Felt like I was seeing the band in a large living room and by the end of Gloria I was thinking, I don't ever want this show to end!
What a journey.
My other memory of these shows was the way the sound was set up. Big indoor stadium and in those days they had speakers in the way back. During drums/space they would swing the sound front to back, back to front, and the effect was a swirling of sound that spun everyone around & around....
Man I sure do miss those days.

Just read the Dead Gear book, and grooving on the improved vocals (thanks to in-ear monitors) and crazy mid-set-2 technologically sophisticated weirdness. When Garcia was playing especially well, this post-91 through 94 period was my favorite. Unfortunately that didn't happen too often. Here he's doing a professional job, but I wouldn't call it especially great.
Corrina, Other One & Morning Dew are masterful, though.
